This textile piece was created to commemorate the centenary of Michael Collins death. He died on 22nd of August 1922 from a gunshot wound sustained at Béal na Bláth, County Cork.
Stitched using vintage Foxford woollen blankets that were hand dyed by the artist in her studio along the Wild Atlantic Way. They are pieced together as one would making a quilt, then stitched on the surface and embellished with a circle of gold foil.
The blankets were sourced locally and are a nod to the specially commissioned travel blanket presented to General Michael Collins by Foxford Mills in July 1922 to mark his appointment to Commander in Chief of the newly established Irish Army.
The blanket was in his armoured car at the ambush at Béal Na Bláth in August 1922.
It was recovered at Shanakiel Hospital by Nurse Nora O’Donaghue and later donated to the National Museum.
The textile is then framed behind glass in a limed wooden frame measuring 26 x 26 cm.
