Stone Walls and the Grass is Green

Inspired by the wonderful words and lyrics of The Sawdoctors song "N17" this framed textile artwork has been designed and made by hand by Karena in her studio in Tuam- the very home of The Sawdoctors themselves.

A selection of the lyrics have been manual typed with her vintage typewriter and hand beading, hand stitching of Donegal tweed, and hand dyed fabric complete the artwork . Hand knit wool from Aran wool adds depth and texture to the piece.

Each textile artwork has been designed and made by hand which means no two pieces will ever be the same.

She remembers when the song and their albums ( cassette tapes!) were released and when the band visited the Presentation School she went to -  home of the Presentation Boarder, another famous Sawdoctors song.

Listening to this song really hits home especially when you haven't been home to see loved ones. The last year and a half has been challenging for so many who are away from family and friends , longing to come "home" for a hug or to travel on the famous N17.

The first few bars of the song pack a nostalgic punch and for many including Karena,  memories of trips on the bus from Dublin to Tuam, plane journeys, living in Australia, being away on a J1 Visa come flooding back , the song really hits the spot of "feeling a lump in my throat". It's timeless, a classic and one that resonates with thousands all over the world.

The piece is framed in a limed wood box frame behind glass. As I am passionate about sustainability, my frames, packaging and wrapping are custom made in Ireland.

Frame measures 26 x 26 cm.

Artwork measures 12 x 12 cm

Each framed artwork is packed very carefully in custom made cardboard boxes followed by a layer of bubble wrap and then wrapped with biodegradable wrapping paper and tied up with string (these are a few of my favourite things!
